1,3-Dimethylamylamine is synthesized by reacting 4-methylhexanone-2 with hydroxylamine, which converts the 4-methylhexanone-2 to 4-methylhexanone-2 oxime, which is reduced with hydrogen by means of a catalyst; the resulting DMAA can be purified by distillation.

DMAA is a strongly stimulating ingredient also known under other names: 1,3 Dimethylamylamine ,geranium, geramina, geranamine. It affects the central nervous system by blocking noradrenaline reuptake. DMHA is a stimulating compound, in supplements it also occurs under other names: dimethylhexylamine, 2-aminoisoheptane. DMHA is referred to as a DMAA substitute with similar stimulant properties. It effectively promotes cognitive functions and suppresses appetite.
