Oxiracetam is one of the three first-tier racetam compounds, being produced after both Piracetam and Aniracetam.
Oxiracetam Description
It is a nootropic compound belonging to the family of racetams, which are drugs that share the same chemical backbone (a pyrrolidone ring). It is an analog of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a brain chemical known for producing a calming effect.
Oxiracetam is one of the three racetam compounds, the other two being Piracetam and Aniracetam, that activate AMPA-type glutamate receptors in the body. This action increases the density of AMPA receptor binding sites, presumably elevating calcium levels.
In separate clinical trials, it has demonstrated its neuroprotective and cognition-enhancing properties. The compound has also exhibited excellent bioavailability with a tolerable safety profile. PureRawz does not sell it for human consumption.
How does Oxiracetam Work?
Although its exact working mechanism remains unknown, Oxiracetam has been shown to:
- Positively modulate AMPA-sensitive glutamate receptors in neurons
- Stimulate the release of acetylcholine in the brain
- Inhibit pre-programmed cell apoptosis (death) in neurons
- Stimulate the production of cellular energy, such as glucose
- Increases density of 1,4–dihydropyridine receptors in the cerebral cortex
All the above effects have been reported in preliminary animal studies. It is unknown whether it could replicate them in humans. More human trials are thus needed to investigate what effects this racetam may have on the human brain.
Oxiracetam and Memory
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 2,400 mg/day of it improved short-term and verbal memory in 40 elderly with organic brain syndrome. Furthermore, the tolerability of the drug was good, and the improvement in symptoms was observed within 1 week.
A clinical trial examined the effects of Oxiracetam treatment on 73 patients with post-stroke or primary degenerative dementia. Final results indicated that the drug improved verbal memory. It was also found to improve oral fluency in both groups of patients.
Similarly, in three clinical trials, it exhibited greater improvements than placebo in the memory of mild to moderate dementia patients. The study also noted that it is a safe compound at single and repeated oral dosages of up to 2,400 mg for 3 months.
Dosage information
Supplementation of Oxiracetam tends to be in the dosage range of 1,200-2,400mg taken over the course of a day, either in two to three evenly spread dosing periods (such as three doses of 400mg or 800mg).
No studies have assessed whether or not oxiracetam would benefit from being taken with a meal, but it should be taken approximately one hour prior to a learning activity.
