Tamoxifen citrate powder is the prototype agent of a class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), which have both estrogenic and antiestrogenic effects on various tissues. The structure of tamoxifen is based on the same nucleus as diethylstilbestrol, but tamoxifen's additional side chain (trans isomer) imparts antiestrogenic activity. It is chemically related to another antiestrogen, clomiphene.
