What does Arimidex do to the body?
Estrogen is a hormone that plays a key role in the growth and development of breast cancer. It is produced in the body by an enzyme called aromatase, which converts androgens (male hormones) into estrogen. By blocking the activity of aromatase, Arimidex reduces the amount of estrogen in the body, which can slow or stop the growth of breast cancer cells.
In addition to its use in breast cancer treatment, Arimidex has also been used off-label to treat infertility in women with ovulatory disorders. Arimidex Dosage
The dose of Arimidex is one 1 mg tablet taken once a day. For patients with advanced breast cancer, Arimidex should be continued until tumor progression. Arimidex can be taken with or without food.
For adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer in postmenopausal women, the optimal duration of therapy is unknown. In the ATAC trial, ARIMIDEX was administered for five years.
