Uses: Vardenafil hydrochloride is a selective phsphodiesterase type 5 (pde5) inhibitor that is used as a urological agent in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Vardenafil is a first-choice medication for erectile dysfunction (ED). It's no longer sold under the brand name Levitra, but it's available as generic tablets and orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs). Common side effects of vardenafil include headache, flushing, and stuffy nose. Interactions between vardenafil and other medications generally involve those that lower blood pressure.

1. Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
2. Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.
3. Take this medicine about 60 minutes before you have sex. Do not take it more than once per day. Always allow at least 24 hours between doses.
4. Disintegrating tablet: Do not open the blister pack until you are ready to take the tablet. Make sure your hands are dry and peel back the foil to remove the tablet. Do not push the tablet through the foil. Place the tablet on your tongue and let it melt. Do not take the medicine with liquid. Do not break, crush, or chew it.
5. Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Vardenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor used for treating erectile dysfunction. Vardenafil's indications and contra-indications are the same as with other PDE5 inhibitors; it is closely related in function to Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) and Tadalafil (Cialis). The difference between the Vardenafil molecule and Sildenafil citrate is that a nitrogen atom has different position and the change of Sildenafil's piperazine ring methyl group to an ethyl group. Tadalafil is structurally different from both Sildenafil and Vardenafil. Vardenafil's relatively short effective time is comparable to but somewhat longer than Sildenafil's.

Further, Vardenafil lengthens QT interval. Therefore it should not be taken by men taking other medications that affect the QT interval (such as Amiodarone).

Patients taking Levitra are usually started on a 10 mg dose, which they take no more than once daily, about one hour before sexual activity. It can take as little as 30 minutes for Levitra to work in some patients. Like with Viagra, Levitra dosages are adjusted depending on a person's reaction, with doctors generally decreasing doses to to 2.5 mg or increasing them to no more than 20 mg once a day.

Vardenafil, as with all PDE5 inhibitors, should not be used by men taking nitrate medications, because combining them with Vardenafil might provoke potentially life-threatening hypotension (low blood pressure).
